With its elliptical-shaped case and off-centered dial, the sparkle of an Audemars Piguet Millenary timepiece will catch the eye even across a crowded room. The collection was first introduced in 1995 — just before the millennium, thus the name — and was available exclusively for men in the beginning. It wasn’t until 20 years later that the brand launched a women’s version. Four years on, and a number of exquisite Millenary timepieces have been created for women and this year is no exception, with three new versions featuring new details, materials and finishing techniques.
Each of the new models has its own unique style, starting with a rose gold version fitted with a scintillating white opal dial. This is the first time the Millenary Ladies Collection has featured an opal dial and the effect is stunning. This new timepiece has also been decorated with the brand’s frosted gold technique on the case. This decorative technique was introduced to the brand by jewelry designer Carolina Bucci, who was the creative mind behind the Royal Oak Frosted Gold models that have been extremely successful.
The other two new pieces — one in rose gold and the other in white gold — have mother-of-pearl dials, diamonds on the bezel and lugs, and include matching Polish woven gold bracelets.
The Polish bracelet is similar to the Milanese bracelet in that they are both made from long, gold-wire springs that are woven together into chain mail, a technique that dates back to medieval times and the fabrication of knights’ armor. This mesh is sawn, welded and assembled by hand. The difference between the Polish and Milanese techniques lies in the way the wires are rolled. The Milanese technique rolls the wires in the same direction, where the Polish style rolls the wires in alternate directions, which is far more complex.
All three watches are powered by the Caliber 5201, Audemars Piguet’s hand-wound, manufacture movement with a 49-hour power reserve. Functions include hours, minutes and small seconds. The 18-karat gold cases are fitted with anti-reflective sapphire crystals front and back and each crown is set with a precious stone — a translucent sapphire cabochon for the opal version and a pink sapphire cabochons for the rose gold and white gold versions.
For women looking for a fine timepiece with a beautifully-crafted movement and stunning aesthetics, the new Millenary timepieces will truly help them stand out from the crowd.
