BASELWORLD ROUNDUP

Like all those who write diaries, I am afraid that I missed a couple of days of my BaselWorld diary. I started well with days one through three, and then Basel got the better of me. But hey, no where in the grand rules of diary making does it say you can’t catch up later… so here I am, back in the calm of the Revolution Switzerland office, with press kits strewn all over the floor and pen at the ready to fill you in.

Let’s start with some fun statistics—so we covered 48 km of the fair in the pursuit of watches and tried on a total of 867 timepieces. The most expensive watch we saw (but weren’t allowed to touch) was Graff’s 55 million dollar multi-colored diamond piece, and the least expensive (which we were allowed to jump on because it was the most indestructible watch of the show) was Victorinox’s new Inox timepiece at only USD 499.

We chatted with brand CEOs, retailers, collectors, fellow journalists and more, and the general mood of the show was very positive. We have certainly moved away from the craziness of years past, but I feel that it is a healthy shift as the watch industry now has its feel firmly on the ground.

Special congratulations go to all those crazy watch people who actually woke up at the crack of dawn to go running—notably Ehren from Devon; Mike and Sarah from Bremont; Mike from Gucci; Kathy, Mike and Kelly from Movado Group; Andy from Nixon and my husband Keith.

And an even bigger congratulations to all the people who make BaselWorld happen; it truly is the highlight of our watch world!
