It’s beginning to feel a lot like pre-SIHH season (which is my subtle way of saying that you should REALLY keep your eyes on REVO this week). Today, the festive fun continues with Baume & Mercier. I wrote about the glorious Clifton Perpetual Calendar launched earlier this year here. And now we have one further Clifton for him and one new Promesse for her.
First up, for him, a complication as useful as it is cosmopolitan: dual-time indication. The new Clifton isn’t a small watch. At 43mm, in a steel case with polished & satin finishes, its form nicely highlights the collection’s hallmark double bevel. The deep blue dial is glorious and features the date, the power reserve at 6 o’clock and a second-time indication at 12. I’ve long been a fan of sword-shaped hands, and combined with the Arabic numerals and a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal — this watch has all the charm you’d want from a new watch. The date display is, of course, at 3 o’clock. Looking beyond the dial you will also find subtle red notes and the delicate white edging around the date which are nice touches. Inside is a self-winding Soprod 9035 caliber with a 42 hour power reserve. Through the sapphire crystal caseback you’ll see the circular-grained finished plate and bridges, bleued steel screws and oscillating weight decorated with “Côtes de Genève”.
Designed for travellers, the new Clifton GMT Power Reserve embodies all that’s good about the brand — restrained elegance and value. The Clifton is set to retail for £3,100.
