Five to Watch at the World Athletics Championships 2017 (And Their Watches)

The sporting action just keeps coming this summer with the World Athletics Championships kicking off this evening in London (4 August 2017). It is exactly five years since Great Britain won three Olympic gold medals in less than an hour on “Super Saturday” at the same venue — Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park — during the London Olympics. And, if the running, throwing and jumping doesn’t get your juices flowing, maybe witnessing history as sporting great Usain Bolt sprints for the final time will. The Championships will also see Mo Farah go for another distance double gold and defending 400m metre champion Wayde van Niekerk battle it out against the world’s greatest challengers. But let’s cut to that’s chase — what do these guys wear on their writs when they are off the track?

First up is Mo Farah. I have to say this one caught me by surprise, here he is on his Instagram wearing a rose gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The man’s killing it in my opinion — good on you Sir Mo! Farah’s 5,000m and 10,000m double was one of the defining memories of the London Olympics in 2012. Since then the 34-year-old has repeated the feat at World Championships in Moscow and Beijing as well as last summer’s Rio Olympics, and is favourite to do so once again before shifting his focus to marathon.

Next up is Usain Bolt where we see him wearing a variety of Hublot Big Bangs. If there has been one athlete that has done wonders for the brand, surely its Bolt. Possibly not the most interesting choice, but one that fits his athleticism. Bolt originally intended to retire in the wake of Rio 2016, but reconsidered after his sponsor suggested a London farewell a year later would be even better. Now 30, the Jamaican had a slow start to the season, dipping under 10 seconds for the first time in Monaco a fortnight ago — we wish him all the best.

Wayde van Niekerk caused a real stir in Rio when he crossed the line in the 400m wearing a Richard Mille and, in doing so, broke Michael Johnson’s 17-year world record. Don’t be surprised to see him wearing a custom South African flag Richard Mille on and off the track. And then, there is Richard Mille’s latest ambassador, Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim, who Revolution spoke to two weeks ago in Paris and who also wears his RM 67-02 “High Jump” — a variation on the RM 67-01 — on and off the field.

God was present 🙏🙏🙏 Blessed race

Andrew Pozzi may not be a household name yet, but he is certainly one to watch. This season the hurdler had shown flashes of what he is capable of moving up to third in the British all-time list behind Colin Jackson and Tony Jarrett with a 13.14 in Paris in July. A quick scan of his Instagram suggests he is a Rolex guy, seen here wearing a Submariner.

Finally, the Jamaican hurdler Omar McLeod, seen here wearing a Casio G-Shock. The Olympic champion has bombed out of a couple of races on the circuit this year, but with undoubted pedigree he could pull one out of the bag this weekend.
