Grand Seiko made two major announcements for their 60th anniversary this week – first is the formation of GS9 club, which is an exclusive community for the U.S Grand Seiko collectors, and the second is a U.S. limited edition Spring Drive watch. This watch symbolizes Japanese spirituality and love of nature, while also being distinctly American.
Grand Seiko was established in 1960 and was designed to make timepieces that offer high quality precision, legibility, and design. GS were innovators with the Spring Drive movement which offers highly precise and seamless seconds hand motion. This U.S. limited edition watch was designed with American nature and topography as the driving force.
SBGE263 is limited to 110 pieces, with the significance of the 10 pieces, in addition to the 100, is for the brand to mark the 10 years of existence in the U.S. market. This watch has few similarities with the recent Grand Seiko South East Asian limited edition, SBGE267. However, the SE Asian edition is larger in size at 44mm, and has a distinctly different bezel and GMT hand.
Grand Seiko designed this watch with the Eagle, an American icon and a bird of prey. The Eagle is a symbol of strength and nature in the United States. According to Grand Seiko, “The design of this new sport watch pulls its inspiration from the Eagle, a large bird with a powerful beak whose dominance has earned it a majestic, yet authoritative reputation.” The dial is a deep brown color which resembles the feathers of the Eagle. The bezel is also colored a deep brown and is ceramic. The GMT hand is a very large golden arrow which resembles the beak of the Eagle.
The movement is the Caliber 9R66 with a 72 hour power reserve. This Spring Drive movement is exclusive to Seiko watches and allows the local time to jump the appropriate time, when changing time zones, without having to reset the watch. The watch also features a sweeping seconds hand which has graceful motion to match the impeccable Grand Seiko aesthetics.
It is good to see the downsizing of case dimensions by Grand Seiko. SBGE263 makes for a great sports watch with the 40.5mm case and ceramic bezel with second time zone. Grand Seiko has created a watch which is recognizably American while staying true to Grand Seiko’s Japanese ideals. It will be highly coveted by Grand Seiko collectors. This watch will be available in January 2021 exclusively for GS9 club members, and at the Grand Seiko Boutiques.
