Hublot Classic Fusion Special Edition Celebrates ‘Love Affair’ with London

At an event held at the very apex of the instantly recognisable skyscraper known as “the Gherkin”, Hublot unveiled the instantly covetable Classic Fusion Special Edition “London”. As declared by the brand, the watch was conceived to celebrate Hublot’s “on-going love affair with the vibrant, colourful city of London”.

Hosting the glamorous event was Omar Choudhary, Hublot Brand Director UK, with guests including racing driver and Hublot Friend of the Brand Chris Froggatt, as well as football coach and former France and Manchester United star Patrice Evra. Guests were treated to a set by DJ Matt and mingled over canapés and cocktails.

With London again being regarded as a capital of cool – an honour first held in the Swinging Sixties and again in the Cool Britannia Nineties – the Hublot Classic Fusion Special Edition “London” is a perfectly timed (pun intended) statement piece. It shouts the Britishness of 1960s Carnaby Street style, when names like Twiggy and the Rolling Stones and the Kinks embodied the city’s spirit, when the Union flag didn’t merely represent a nation, but also an attitude.

Hublot has used this globally recognised emblem as the most significant element of the watch: its polished and satin-finished black ceramic bezel and micro-blasted, sunray-finished racing grey dial are engraved with the motif which, says the company, is “a patriotic touch that radiates both classic British understatement and the capital’s cool confidence”.

A proper Hublot in every respect, its 10 signature ‘H’ screws are set into the bezel and they and the case are cast in contrasting polished titanium. Measuring 45mm in diameter, the black ceramic case houses Hublot’s MHUB1112 automatic movement with 42-hour power reserve, and the eye is always drawn to the engraved Union Jack because the timepiece is uncluttered: its functions are limited to time and date. The various shades of grey – we hope there are 50 as that’s the number of examples which will be produced, as well as the depth in meters to which it is water-resistant – are offset by a hint of red at the tip of the central seconds hand.

Further distinguishing this £9,500 limited edition, which will vanish swiftly from the only two venues where it can be purchased – Hublot’s New Bond Street and Harrods boutiques – is a sapphire crystal caseback decorated with “Hublot Loves London”. Its black rubber strap is adorned with a black tartan pattern to represent the City of London tartan theme as listed on The Scottish Register of Tartans.

Mr Choudhary said: ‘‘The Hublot Classic Fusion Special Edition ‘London’ is the product of Hublot’s passion for this ever-evolving world city. It’s a symbol of the special relationship between us and the values of quality, excellence and style Hublot and London share. Our loyal local clients have been asking for a watch that brings the invention and creativity of Hublot’s fusion watchmaking philosophy to bear on a London-themed piece, and we know both they and our international visitors who love coming here will enjoy the spirit behind it, too. Hublot loves London!”
