Hublot’s Fusion With Lake Geneva Regatta

Some say that one of the reasons of Geneva’s success as one of the watchmaking capitals in the world is thanks to the mythical powers of Lake Geneva. Those who have every seen it in real life must admit that looking over this vast body of deep blue water surrounded by the high peaks for which Switzerland is so famous for, is something extraordinary. Having a knack for things extraordinary then, it is not strange that Hublot is sponsoring the Bol d’Or Mirabaud, one of that world’s most premier regattas on an inland lake. Of course this regatta takes place on no other lake than Lake Geneva, on whose banks the Hublot manufacture is situated.

l_img_6197The Bol d’Or Mirabaud is not your average regatta, but brings an armada of 600 boats to compete on Lake Geneva. These amateurs and professionals alike all compete in various classes for honor and glory, while being watched by an audience of thousands. Of course, Hublot’s connection to the Bol d’Or Mirabaud runs deeper than that is being played out on its doorstep. The famous Hublot design finds its origin in the nautical world, its name actually meaning “porthole”. Being also the sponsor of the 2013 Bol d’Or Mirabaud, when the regatta celebrated its 75th anniversary, the brand has been asked back for this year to function as official timing partner once again.l__dl09890Hublot would of course not be Hublot if they wouldn’t dedicate a limited edition to mark the occasion. The trick with a limited edition dedicated to an event is always that one needs to find something that really embodies the spirit of the occasion. Especially since this event strikes so close to home for Hublot, a delicate task. It seems that these are the moments when Hublot really knows how to rise to the occasion, because the limited edition in honor of the Bol d’Or Mirabaud does tick off all the boxes.

l_521-01-bom14-pr-hr-bHublot opted for the Classic Fusion chronograph, the line in their current collection that has the closest ties to the original Hublot. Although at 45mm, the diameter is almost as vast as Lake Geneva is large, Hublot kept the weight down by a case crafted from titanium. Nice as well that the titanium is mirror polished while the lugs have a satin-finish. The bezel and the majority of the dial are crafted from carbon fiber, which gives the Classic Fusion a very modern look, and one similar to many of the boats that sail in the regatta, that also combine classic looks with modern materials. The subdials of the chronograph, as well as the stitching of the strap, are featured in a deep blue color as a reference to the water of Lake Geneva. For the subdials, Hublot applied a sunburst finish, which lets them play with the light, much in the same way as the water in Lake Geneva does. As could be expected, since this is the 76th edition of the Bol d’Or Mirabaud, only 76 of these special Classic Fusion’s will be made. Quite a limited amount when one takes into consideration that among the crews of the 600 boats participating in the event alone, demand should be more than enough for every last one to be sold.
