Interstellar’s “The Murph” Watch Becomes Reality

For fans of watches and cinema, “The Murph” watch is considered one of the best uses of a watch in movie history. This one-off Hamilton timepiece starred in Interstellar, playing a pivotal plot role. In fact, the Hamilton watch that Cooper, the main character, gives to his daughter, Murph, is instrumental in saving humanity – not bad for a humble watch.

Ever since the movie came out, Hamilton fans have been clamoring for the brand to make a commercial version of “The Murph,” and now here it is.

To celebrate its Year of Cinema, Hamilton is introducing the Khaki Field Murph, a 42mm stainless steel timepiece with a black dial, beige Super-LumiNova inlaid hands, H-10 automatic movement with 80-hour power reserve on a black leather strap. In fact, the Khaki Field Murph is an exact reproduction of the movie watch, without the ability to communicate in Morse code, however.

To make up for that, however, the word “Eureka” (what Murph yells when she figures out the message her father has sent across time and space, using Morse code and the watch’s seconds hand) is printed in lacquer in Morse code on the seconds hand. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d never see it as it is barely visible to the naked eye.

In close collaboration with the film’s award-winning production designer, Nathan Crowley, Hamilton developed a special box which is an inspiration of the famous “tesseract” from the film. The Khaki Field Murph itself is not limited, but the special packaging is. Just 2,555 have been produced. The colored stripes recall the inside of the supercube where Cooper is when he discovers he can communicate with Murph.
