Following the much-lauded introduction of the Laureato Skeleton, Girard-Perregaux is introducing yet another version of the Laureato that is sure to turn a great many number of heads. Meet, now, the Laureato 42mm Ceramic — an all blacked out (or murdered out, in cool-speak) version of the Laureato 42mm.
But this, of course, isn’t blacked out the way watches were turned dark in the days of the Laureato’s 1976 birth year, which was typically a DLC treatment on top of stainless-steel cases and bracelets. Rather, as is suggested in the name of the watch, the black here is the innate color of the ceramic used to form the new Laureato’s case, bracelet and even its clasp.
And as we’ve learned from yet another black ceramic watch, announced earlier in 2017, to create a timepiece that is mostly nothing more than ceramic, is no small feat. First there is the challenge of figuring out the right chemical formulation, in order to obtain the desired black color on the case and bracelet.
Second, owing to the many facets that cases and bracelets such as that of the Laureato’s has, the manufacture also has to develop the right techniques to polish or brush the appropriate surfaces on the ceramic material, to transpose the watch’s aesthetic characteristics as they would appear on any other stainless-steel or precious metal variation.
Simply put, it’s a knowhow that a lot of research and development must go into. It’s an effort that, no doubt, taxes a manufacture. Which is why completely ceramic cases and bracelets aren’t commonplace in the market. Plenty of ceramic bezels and mid-cases, though.
In this light, what is most impressive is that Girard-Perregaux is adding the Laureato 42mm Ceramic as a regular production piece to the collection; not as a numbered or limited edition timepiece.
