Introducing Patek Philippe’s 9 New York 2017 Special Edition Timepieces

As an added bonus to what is already looking like one of the most promising watch events this year, Patek Philippe is unveiling nine special edition timepieces, which take inspiration from and celebrate the city where the maison’s The Art of Watches Grand Exhibition is set to take place: New York.

With mostly classic re-imaginations — and one of Patek Philippe’s most audacious creations — the watches are all set to be issued in limited numbers, and are sure to fly off the shelves before you know it.

So, let’s skip the formalities and dive straight in.

Leading the pack are two renditions of the freshly minted ref. 5531, which bring together the world time and minute repeater complications into a single watch.

The novelty in the movement developed for the watch is that unlike most other world time minute repeaters, which always chime home time when the minute repeater is activated, the 5531 is able to chime the local time as indicated by the central hour and minute hands.

Now, the reason there are two versions to the watch can be found in the center of its dial, where the Manhattan skyline is depicted using cloisonné enamel. First version shows the skyline by day time and the second shows the skyline by night time.

Each rendition uses a 42mm, 18K rose gold case and will be produced in just five examples of each version.

Price: US$561,341

World Time Ref. 5230 New York 2017 Special Edition

The second watch is a world time piece as well, but focuses solely on the one complication. It, too, has Manhattan at its center, embossed in an opaline blue.

We’ve, of course, seen the 5230 in several expressions as part of Patek Philippe’s regular collection, fitted the automatic, mirco-rotor wound caliber 240 HU that allows for the city disc to be adjusted using the pusher at 10 o’clock.

The same movement is found in the New York 2017 Special Edition housed in the same 38.5mm white gold case. However, this one will be made in a limited run of 300 pieces.

Price: US$47,000

World Time Ref. 7130 New York 2017 Special Edition

The 7130 is a definitively feminine version of the 5230 and uses the same automatic, mirco-rotor wound caliber 240 HU.

Produced in an option of white gold (7130G) and rose gold (7130R), the 36mm case is adorned with 62 flawless rare white Top Wesselton diamonds. The watch also features the embossed New York skyline as in the earlier 5230.

The 7130 will be produced in a limited run of 75 pieces in white and another 75 pieces in rose gold.

Let’s just say it right now: Of all the watches that make up the New York 2017 Special Edition collection, this is the one that will fly the fastest.

The 5522A is, of course, a purified version of the highly polarizing 5524G, Calatrava Pilot Travel Time — which despite its initial reputation did brilliantly at the retail point — minus the Travel Time complication.

The watch is a time only piece, powered by the automatic caliber 324 S fitted inside of a 42mm STEEL case.

Slated to be produced in a limited run of 600 pieces, I’ll be damned if this isn’t the first one that’s sold out.

Price: US$21,547

Calatrava Ref. 7200/50 New York 2017 Special Edition

Almost towards the end now. So the second last on the list is the 7200/50, which is an effeminate 34.6mm Calatrava, fitted with the caliber 240 ultra-thin self-winding mechanical movement.

The watch will be produced in two dial variations: The 7200/50G-010, which is the lighter colored mother of pearl and the 7200/50G-01, essentially the darker dial. 75 pieces will be produced of each version.

Price: US$29,485

Minute Repeater Ref. 7000/250 New York 2017 Special Edition

The last on the list is another minute repeater, the ref. 7000/250, which features a 33.7 white gold case, “Flamme®” set using 160 flawless Top Wesselton diamonds. The setting referred to here is a proprietary method of Patek Philippe’s. The maison says this is the first time they’ve gem-set a minute repeater.

The minute repeater, powered by the ultra-thin self-winding caliber R 27 PS, is able to sound out the hour, quarter hour and minutes when activated.

The watch will be limited to just three pieces.
