Introducing the Baume & Mercier Clifton Day-date Moonphase

The Clifton series from Baume & Mercier deserves to be called the most representative work of the brand. The collection, inspired by the golden age of watchmaking in the 1950s, combines its elegant style with contemporary aesthetics to present a classic men’s watch with a refined yet slightly retro look.

The unique charm of the Clifton is that it is an easy and gratifying timepiece, thanks to the numerous details Baume & Mercier has added to its design as well as the brand’s focus on the overall visual balance and wearing comfort. For instance, the rounded case and lugs are molded as one piece for beautiful lines. Meanwhile, the slender bezel is slightly beveled rather than flat to give the whole watch the softness of curves in addition to elegance and delicacy. Not to be missed are the elegance in the hour-markers, the hands on the dial and its layout. Its concise and restrained design without any cumbersome decoration integrates the simple aesthetics into the reading function, creating a unique piece that stands out from other contemporary men’s watches.

Now Baume & Mercier has launched another equally pleasant new work – Baume & Mercier Clifton Day-date Moonphase. Continuing with the fascinating and graceful appearance, the most eye-catching part of this new work is firstly, the smoky grey dial. The gradient grey dial, together with the pink gold case and gold-plated hour marks and hands, form a striking combination with excellent texture and a calm but attractive hue.

With respect to functions, the symmetrical layout of the date, week and moon phase indicators is integrated on the dial of the Clifton piece for the first time. At 12 o’clock is a sub dial for the week indication, while the moon phase dial and date indicator is located at 6 o’clock.

The moon phase is another complication worthy of appreciation. Baume & Mercier utilizes a grey transparent sapphire crystal rather than the usual half-cover design over the starry background to show off the whole operation of the moon phase, while embellishing it with an aura of mysterious beauty and making it the visual focus of the whole dial.

The brand logo sits at 9 o’clock and the 3 o’clock is occupied by the text BAUMATIC 5DAYS, which means that the watch is equipped with an in-house Baumatic movement with a power reserve of five days.

Baume & Mercier Clifton Day-date Moonphase

The Clifton Day-date Moonphase is equipped with the Baumatic 14 self-winding movement made by Baume & Mercier, which is a new movement based on the reliable Baumatic basic movement with the addition modules of week, date and moon phase, while the high-efficiency performance of 5-day power reserve is maintained. This excellent movement is enclosed in a 42-mm pink gold case and comes with a replaceable quick-release blue alligator strap.

Along with the announced Baumatic Day-Date Moonphase model, two other variants of the in-house movement are being released this year. The COSC-certified Baumatic caliber has a new base variant, the BM13 with small date display at 3 o’clock and a three-hand display. Since the Baumatic caliber has been released, it’s allowed Baume & Mercier to really step up its game and develop designs and movements based on its own ideas.

With a COSC certification and 5-day power reserve, it’s a very solid base movement to build on, and since it is a relatively compact design, it allows the brand to develop watches of a balanced size for today. The three-hand with date model comes in 4 variations, with a rose gold case, a two-tone steel-and-gold case with bracelet, as well as steel with bracelet or leather strap. The dials are in graduated gray lacquer or white porcelain finish.

A second variant running on the same BM14 caliber as the Day-Date Moonphase model, is the moonphase with date, which is just a modification of its more complicated sibling. A single rather than double moonphase display and analogue date counter at 6 o’clock on a white dial, steel model, available with a bracelet or alligator leather strap. These two models complete the range of calendar model options on the Baumatic, from a perpetual calendar all the way down to a simple date display. It does demonstrate the robustness of the movement, so you can be sure there will be additional future complications to the mix.

The Clifton Baumatic Date and Moonphase Automatic will be priced at USD4,000 and USD4,200 for the steel bracelet option, while the Clifton Baumatic Automatic starts from USD3,000 to upwards of USD7,000 for the rose gold model. The Baumatic Perpetual Calendar in rose gold case retails at USD25,000. These prices are based on existing currency rates and may fluctuate.
