Let’s just say it from the get-go, the world would be short of a great watchmaking name today, had it not been for Jack Heuer and what he did for the company, since having accepted his father’s offer to join the Heuer family business, in 1958. Two years later, he was at the helm, where he remained until 1982. Jack Heuer’s time with the company gave us the Carrera. A family of watches, which forever changed our idea of what a great looking, utilitarian chronograph could be.
In the year 2020, as TAG Heuer is marking its 160th anniversary, the brand has made it a mission to place all focus on the Carrera. We’ve seen several impressive launches with this in mind, such as the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition, which kicked things off for the brand earlier in the year at the LVMH Watch Week in Dubai.
Considering it was Jack Heuer who gave life to the Carrera, TAG Heuer’s decided that in recognition of his work for the brand, and the significance of the year 2020, a special edition should be issued to celebrate the man himself. For this, the La Chaux-de-Fonds based watchmaker has created a watch that takes inspiration from one of Jack Heuer’s personal favorite Carreras: the all-gold Heuer Carrera 1158CHN from the 1970s.
The Heuer Carrera 1158CHN
The reference holds further significance for TAG Heuer and Jack Heuer himself because in the 1970s, when watchmaker was associated with the Ferrari Formula 1 team, Jack Heuer had developed a tradition of presenting these gold watches to the team’s driving roster — including Ronnie Peterson, Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni — for good luck. Jack Heuer would have the driver’s name and blood group engraved on the back of the watch, before he presented the watch to them. In collector’s circles today, these are best known as the “Ferrari Carrera.”
The striking 38mm gold barrel shaped case of the watch is made even more impressive with the champagne gold dial where the black printed tachymeter, minute track, sub dials and even the black accents on the hands and hour markers — present outstanding contrast and legibility.
The Heuer Carrera 1158CHN was powered by the automatic Calibre 12, presenting hours and minutes on the central pinion, a date window at 6 o’clock; central chronograph seconds hand, paired with a 30-minute totalizer at 3 o’clock and 12-hour totalizer at 9 o’clock.
TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Jack Heuer Birthday Gold Limited Edition
Taking inspiration from the Heuer Carrera 1158CHN, TAG Heuer is announcing today the Carrera Chronograph Jack Heuer Birthday Gold Limited Edition. At 42mm, the 18K 5N rose gold watch is clearly of modern proportions taking on the case design of the Carrera Chronograph 42mm, announced earlier in September.
The dial on the watch is opaline with a silver flange. You have the running seconds and date window paired together at 6 o’clock. A 30-minute totalizer, at 3 o’clock, and a 12-hour totalizer, at 9 o’clock. The sideways marking of the number “88” just under the center pinion is a nod to Jack Heuer’s 88th birthday this year. On the same note, the watch will be limited to 188 pieces.
