URWERK’s latest spin on their ultra-technical TimeHunter is a white ceramic clad option, unambiguously named after George Lucas’ famous space soldiers. Though if we’re honest, the comparison only goes part of the way.

Sure, the white ceramic-coated case is a stylistic match for the clean, minimal lines of the StormTrooper armour, that’s about as far as the comparison goes. Because if StormTroopers are famous for one thing, it’s their inability to hit a target effectively, and the URWERK EMC TimeHunter is a device that’s all about pinpoint accuracy.

The StormTrooper belongs to URWERK’s chronometry family, where precision is the raison d’être. To that end, the TimeHunter is a watch that boasts both a mechanical, manually wound time display with an Electro-Mechanical Control (the EMC), which is there to measure (via a laser diode) the amplitude and rate deviation of the mechanical elements.

Moreover, this EMC is powered by a hand-wound dynamo, which is charged via a recessed lever on the right side of the case. But more than just measure the accuracy of the watch, the TimeHunter allows the wearer to regulate the rate and adjust the accuracy of the movement via a timing adjustment screw. Very serious watchmaking indeed and a logical evolution of URWERK’s mission.

The TimeHunter as we know it today was first launched in 2016 (the concept piece came out in 2013). It’s a design that has seen a few makeovers of the bulky, distinctive 43mm-wide case, but this StormTrooper layout is one of the most outstanding — the titanium and stainless steel case has been given a white ceramic lacquer coating that would look at equally cool on Hoth or downtown Melbourne.
