Panerai Champions the Oceans With Two New Models

Since Panerai first established the Submersible as a separate and independent line, the collection has steadily grown. With two notable ocean legends behind the collection — seafarer and explorer Mike Horn, and freediving champion Guillaume Néry — the Submersible has also become a bit of a conservation platform through which Panerai can engage its customers with environmental protection.

This year, the brand is presenting two sportier models, one of which is a Mike Horn edition watch, the Submersible EcoPangaeaTM Tourbillon GMT 50MM PAM01108. Like the previous special editions developed with the two ambassadors, this watch is a limited edition and comes with a special opportunity to experience the Arctic with Mike Horn. You’ll need a heart of steel to go along with this fantastic watch.

The watch itself is made of EcoPangaeaTM high-tech steel, which is composed of recycled metal from the 35-meter drive shaft of the sailing ship Pangaea, which Horn has sailed pretty much across the entire world, up, down and around all over. The metal is extracted, purified and treated before being shaped into this watch.

The watch, like all Submersibles, has a unidirectional rotating bezel, with indicators colored in “Arctic blue”, and features Panerai’s P.2005/T Tourbillon GMT movement made in titanium, that’s well familiar to collectors. It’s comparative large because of the inclusion of a soft iron ring to act as a Faraday cage for the watch. Panerai’s perpendicular 30-second tourbillon can be seen at 10 o’clock, small seconds at 9, day/night indication at 3, with a central GMT hand and 6-day power reserve at 7 o’clock.

The skeleton movement design allows one to enjoy the view of the tourbillon from both sides, and the back bears Mike Horn’s signature in Arctic blue

Like Horn’s past editions, the watch comes with a strap made from recycled PET material, with a Velcro closure for security and convenience, as well as a rubber strap. But what’s truly exciting about this project is that Horn will be taking you to the Arctic on an expedition supervised personally by him. Only five pieces will be produced at EUR 190,000 each; best of luck to whoever manages to get their hands on one!

For those who still want a dose of adrenaline but perhaps from afar rather than up close, an alternative watch is available with the Luna Rossa GMT model. Panerai has been a partner of Luna Rossa since the last America’s Cup, and this model is inspired by the Challenger of Record of the 36th America’s Cup, which will conclude in 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand.

The watch, housed in a 44mm titanium case, is treated with a black DLC coating for utmost durability. As you’ll know, DLC works better on titanium because it’s a lightweight metal. The dial of the watch bears the standard Panerai sandwich dial with technical sail fabric from the Luna Rossa laid over the top, making each watch unique.

On the case back, the watch bears Luna Rossa’s logo along with an engraving of the AC75 monohull and America’s Cup trophy, and on the dial, the words “Luna Rossa Challenger 36th America’s Cup” are printed. The watch is powered by the reliable P.9010/GMT, a solid performer with a central GMT hand for easy reading of time. It’s a handsome model that will definitely be well received. The watch is priced at EUR 10,900.
