In the rarified world of fine skeleton tourbillions, Roger Dubuis stands at the forefront. At SIHH, the Manufacture will introduce a timepiece that takes the art form to new heights: the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillion.

The Spider name is, of course, inspired by the creators of the complex, gossamer sculptures found in nature. The newest creation extends the openwork craft beyond the movement to include the case, flange and hands.

The light yet strong 45 x 13.75-mm titanium case features artfully shaped lugs that resemble the steel superstructure of an architectural statement awaiting its shell. The horizontal openworking extends along the sides of the case, creating a deeply three-dimensional framework.

The RD505SQ caliber measures 16’’’ in diameter and 5.7 mm thick. It is fully skeletonized and finely finished with chamfered and polished edges. Decoration includes straight and circular graining, and Côtes de Genève. This movement was designed from the ground up to be openworked, meaning that it retains critical strength in all key areas.

The one-minute flying tourbillion, located at 7 o’clock, features a finely polished carriage. The Poinçon de Genève, or Geneva Seal, is visible at 3 o’clock. This hand-wound movement consists of 165 parts. Adjusted to six positions, it runs in 19 jewels at 3 Hz or 21,600 vph with a 60-hour power reserve.
