Pre-SIHH 2019: Hermès Arceau 78

The new Arceau 78 is the latest in the Arceau line, bringing yet another eye-catching design to this iconic collection. The Arceau was designed by Henri d’Origny in 1978 (this is where the number 78 comes from). Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, it is surprising how contemporary the Arceau looks and feels – a true testament to d’Origny’s genius at creating timeless designs.

The Arceau is recognizable thanks to its asymmetrical lugs. The lugs at the top are inspired by equestrian stirrups, while the lugs at the bottom are in a more traditional form and are integrated with the strap. The other striking feature of the Arceau is its sloping numerals which were inspired by the movement of a horse’s gallop.

This brand-new “Very Large Model”, as the brand calls it, is housed in a 40mm mirror-polished stainless steel case with a matt stainless steel bezel which has been bead-blasted for this modern brushed effect. The dial comes in an elegant grained anthracite color and the numerals and hands are enhanced with an elegant cream SuperLumiNova. The watch is completed with a natural Barenia calf leather strap crafted in the Hermès Horloger workshops, along with the case and dial.

Simplicity is the key word of this new Arceau 78 and it shows how great design provides the perfect canvas for creativity.
