Pre-SIHH: Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface with Casa Fagliano Strap

Even though the strap makes up a large percentage of the visual presentation of a watch on the wrist, it is often times overlooked for the watch head itself, which invariably contains all that is interesting about the watch in question.

Mostly playing a supporting role therefore, it is only in rare situations when the strap rises to the same level of interest in the watch head itself. These invariably come about when the strap is made in a very special way, with materials that have come from a long lineage of respected tradition. It is in situations like this when people pay attention, when the strap steps out from a supporting role to rival the watch head itself, making a total presentation that is greater than the sum of its parts.

With this in mind therefore, it’s no wonder that Jaeger-LeCoultre comes to SIHH 2018 with a brand new Reverso Tribute Duoface with its main headline feature:  a strap by the celebrated Argentinian bootmakers, Casa Fagliano.

This new watch is in fact the third time that Jaeger-LeCoultre has brought out a Reverso with a Casa Fagliano strap, with the first two instances being from 2011 and 2012, with each occasion being 100-piece limited edition runs of the Reverso Tribute To 1931.

These watches were extremely popular when they were launched back then, not just for the aesthetics and the quality of the leather that was used to make the straps, but also because of the tradition of polo that both companies: Jaeger-LeCoultre and Casa Fagliano are well known for. We all know of course that the iconic reversing case of the Reverso was born in 1931; with its design being conceived as the answer to a challenge issued by a British polo player for a watch whose crystal could be protected during a polo match.

Casa Fagliano, for those who are not familiar, is a 4th generation family business and is what many would consider, the maker of the finest handmade polo boots in the world. These polo boots are produced entirely in the same laborious and traditional way by hand with a very small yearly production of fewer than one hundred pairs a year.

The watch in question for SIHH 2018, the Reverso Duoface Tribute comes with a pink gold case and a limitation of 100 pieces, no doubt a number that takes into account the small production capacity of Casa Fagliano for the straps. Unlike the previous editions of the Reverso Tribute to 1931 on Casa Fagliano straps that were time only watches, the new version with the Reverso Duoface Tribute comes with some interesting complications: on the front, time with hours, minutes and seconds on an elegant slate gray satin-brushed sunray dial; on the reverse side, second time-zone and day/night indicator with a Clous de Paris guilloche and opaline.
