Romain Jerome Does Diamonds. About Time!

Rusted steel from the Titanic, erupting vulcano’s, PacMan; they all featured Romain Jerome’s watches. So what took them so long to use diamonds on their watches in the general collection, especially since they have created some commissioned diamond set watches before? Probably because diamonds are too common for a brand that always seem to take to road less traveled. Talking about the road less traveled; most brands introduce a single diamond set watch, usually when they add a new model or collection to their line-up. Romain Jerome does it slightly different, and introduced three (!) diamond set models, available in different configurations, at once!

But this is not the only way in which Romain Jerome differs from the pack; they didn’t simply add some diamonds to existing models, they redesigned these watches so that the diamonds add something to the overall design and aesthetic.

One of the three models that now feature diamonds is the Moon Invader 40. In good Romain Jerome tradition, the watch actually contain some elements taken from the Apollo 11 spacecraft. The use of diamonds in this watch is quite subtle, forming a chapter ring around the dial. Perhaps even more interesting is the version that features black sapphires, because this changes the design from subtle to down right understated.

Such a thing cannot be said about the use of diamonds in the Titanic-DNA collection. Here, the bezel is set with 286 colorless diamonds, that give the watches in this collection a radiance they never had before. In that sense the more abundant use of diamonds is also very suitable for this collection. Where the rusted, steel bezel’s stand for the forgone days of this era, the diamonds represent the precious and luxurious character that traveling with such ocean liners had in those days.

Luxurious is also the use of diamonds on the Moon Dust Red Mood Chrono. Here Romain Jerome practices the power of restraint, but only setting colorless diamonds on the paws of the watch. A necessary approach, by the way, needed to achieve balance in the overall design of the watch. A balance that is achieved playing with high contrasts; the hand crafted, grey lunar-dial, colorless diamonds, polished red gold, combined with a bezel that features carbon fiber inserts, and all of that strapped on the wrist by means of a fabric strap. Daring territory, but exactly the place where Romain Jerome feels at home and excels – taking the ridiculous away from the obvious approach, and creating something extraordinary. Now with diamonds included!
