Panerai Lab-Id Luminor 1950 Carbotech at SIHH 2017

Rolling around SIHH today there were a number of watches that caught the eye, all for various reasons. But none, for technical reasons, quite like the uber stealth Panerai Carbotech 3 Days. Launched this year, the Luminor 1950 Carbotech LAB-ID features a new black dial, with LAD-ID engraved on the sapphire crystal — not dial (which I thought was a nice touch).  And it has a movement, which doesn’t require lubrication. Yup, you heard, no lubricant. Thats big!

We all know rubies have been utilised in watchmaking for decades as a means for lubrications — so the fact they are all but redundant here is rather exciting.

The case is 49mm and made of composites based on carbon fibre. The movement within is a P.3001/C, a hand wound calibre with 3 days power reserve. The movement features dry lubricated barrels, a silicon escapement, LUB-free shock protection system and self lubricated plates and bridges.

Oh, and you also get a 50 year guarantee from Panerai. One final note: 49mm seems large! I get that. But I have to say, having strapped it on today, it sits far smaller. This would be a killer weekend watch should you have the means (price point is circa $50k).
