Striking Highlights: TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-02T Cortina Edition
The instant headline grabber was the price, paired with ‘T’ for tourbillon. Here was a tourbillon from a storied Swiss watch brand, bearing a sticker price comfortably (uncomfortably, for the competition) below $20k – a mere tenth the asking price of some in the field. A subsequent look at the Carrera Heuer 02T spec sheet left no doubt that TAG Heuer was dead serious.
With skeletonisation, Carrera case and dark carbon hue, the Carrera Heuer 02T is styled as a sports watch on the cutting-edge. Yet it bears the classical complications of chronograph and tourbillon, ticking many high-end boxes along the way: a self-winding integrated chronograph with column wheel; COSC-certified chronometer precision; tourbillon running at a relatively brisk 4Hz; and a very impressive power reserve of 65 hours from a single drum, in a sports watch that is water resistant to 100m. Brawn and brains, beauty and character; a high complication priced and built for everyday wear.
It’s a large watch at 45mm, but Grade 5 titanium case takes care of the weight, and ceramic bezel with just the right amount of orange accents will allow the watch to weather most knocks unscathed. Orange accents elsewhere on the tourbillon bridge, chronograph hands and hour markers draw the eye, and lifts the watch just a touch from the stealth mode monotone of its siblings. Very sporty; and on quieter occasions, the orange strap can be swapped for the black alligator leather strap that is also included with the watch.
