TAG Heuer Honors Muhammad Ali

Share

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

Spoken in 1978, that quote easily embodies the legacy Muhammad Ali left in his wake. In honor of the greatest sportsman of the 20th century, TAG Heuer held a tribute evening for the late Muhammad Ali in New York City last Tuesday, in company of Ali’s friends and family.

Set in the infamous Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, where Ali trained, Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of TAG Heuer and president of the LVMH Group’s watch division, spoke fondly of Ali: “I met Muhammad Ali a few years ago, with his wife Lonnie, and saw in him incredible mental strength. His mind was much stronger than his body. And I said to myself, what strength! His mind made him a legend.”

To commemorate the evening, TAG Heuer presented its “Tribute to Muhammad Ali” Carrera Caliber 5 special edition steel timepieces, inspired by the TAG Heuer Ringmaster watch. This special edition, sporting an opaline black dial, has a rotary ring with a scale — capable of counting out 15 rounds of boxing — and an engraved portrait of Ali on the back of the watch.

A unique version of the watch made of gold, presented in a case with a pair of boxing gloves signed by the champion himself, was auctioned at the event, with all proceeds donated to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.

Organized in collaboration with the Muhammad Ali Center, the star-studded event included Ali’s wife, Lonnie Ali, fellow boxers Ali fought during his prime, such as Charles “Chuck” Wepner, George Chuvalo and Earnie Shavers, and some of the many athletes inspired by Ali, such as Evander Holyfield, Roberto Duràn and Lennox Lewis. With so many present to honor the legend, the evening left little doubt that Muhammad Ali — the People’s Champion — was, no doubt, one of the greatest this world will ever come to know.
